Mirza Mohammad Ali was better known as Hajj Sayyah (Persian) (meaning "the traveler") (1836–1925), was a famous Iranian American world traveler and political activist.
He was inspired to travel around the world due to the contradiction between the democratic ideals he read about and how his fellow Iranians were treated by their leaders. He began his travels as a 23-year-old looking for knowledge, to experience the lives of others, and to use that knowledge to help with Iran's progress.
He is the first Iranian to gain American citizenship. According to the decree issued by the District Court of the 12th Judicial District of the State of California, became a naturalized U.S. citizen on May 26, 1875.
